Innovations in evaluating the impact of environmental interventions. Anupam Anand, GEF; Geeta Batra, GEF
How do we leverage technological innovations for evaluating environmental projects? We invite you to join us to learn about the experiences of the Independent Evaluation Office of the Global Environment Facility (GEFIEO) using innovative technology and tools, machine learning, geospatial and econometric methods.
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
In this session, we discuss how the Independent Evaluation Office at the Global Environment Facility (GEFIEO) is using innovative methods and tools for monitoring and evaluation environmental projects across the globe. Methodological challenges such as sample bias, lack of baseline data, and accounting for co-founding factors can be addressed by using innovative technology and tools, machine learning, geospatial and econometric methods. These methods are often complementary to traditional evaluation approaches, and we will present examples from our various GEF focal area evaluations on biodiversity, land degradation, and international waters. Building upon our experiences in using these methods, we will also share the lessons learned and the way forward. Reference: https://www.gefieo.org/knowledge-methods
Anupam Anand, Evaluation Officer, Global Environment Facility – Independent Evaluation Office (GEF-IEO). At GEF Anupam uses satellite data, GIS, field surveys and other mixed methods to evaluate environmental projects across the globe. Before WBG, Anupam worked as a Remote Sensing Scientist at the Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) where he contributed towards developing satellite based global land use/land cover change data products and modeling animal movements. He has also taught several courses in GIS, spatial analysis, quantitative methods, statistical modeling and data visualization at the University of Maryland. More about Anupam here and at GEF.
Geeta Batra, Dy Director, Global Environment Facility – Independent Evaluation Office (GEF-IEO). Geeta is currently the Chief Evaluation Officer at the GEFIEO. Earlier she was with the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) of the World Bank Group and also spent several years with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), notably as the Global Head of Results Management for IFC’s Advisory Services. In all, she has been with the World Bank Group for about 19 years. More about her here and at GEF.
