The Humanitarian AI Countdown: How do humanitarian organizations operationalize Responsible AI with Shivaang Sharma (October 15th 2025  at 3pm BST/10am ET/ 5pm EAT)

Motivated by their commitment to humanitarian values, humanitarian organizations largely agree on the importance of Responsible AI. However what this means in practice remains ambiguous. Underlying this ambiguity are persistent questions around the specific implications of wanting to use AI responsibly, including:

  • How do the different risk and benefit assessments of humanitarian stakeholders impact how they think about responsible AI?
  • In what ways do objective and subjective evaluations of AI shape the ways in which humanitarian stakeholders understand what it means to use AI Responsibly?
  • And, what do the gaps in individual subjective assessments of AI mean for the design and deployment of AI applications?

To kick off the Humanitarian AI+MERL Working Group’s new event series, The Humanitarian AI Countdown, Shivaang Sharma will join us to talk about his recent research on these very questions. Shivaang will share insights from his work looking at internal organizational differences of AI utility and risks and the manner in which these gaps impact the operationalization of AI in data-sensitive topics. We will also learn more about organizaional recommendations and explore a self-diagnostic tool designed to mitigate these gaps.

Shivaang Sharma is an Assistant Professor at UCL Global Business School for Health (GBSH) where he focuses on Human-AI collaborations that perform complex decision making tasks in extreme crises contexts.
