Event: “Should we be using AI right now?” A conversation about the ethical challenges of the current moment

The increasing connection between Big Tech and the rise in authoritarianism, the recent challenges faced by international development, humanitarian and nonprofit organizations, the elimination of critical AI regulations regarding safety and guardrails (in spite of robust scientific consensus on how it can exacerbate bias and discrimination), the backlash against advances in the areas of gender justice and racial justice, the tension between the environmental impact of AI and the impending climate crisis are some of the issues sparking ethical questions surrounding the use of AI in our conversations across the Natural Language Processing Community of Practice (NLP-CoP).
On May 08, at 10am ET, the NLP-CoP is hosting an event intended to explore some of the practical and ethical questions around the use of Artificial Intelligence in international development, humanitarian and social impact sectors in light of the current context.
During this NLP-CoP members-only event, we are hoping to explore questions such as: What has changed in the past few months? What could these changes mean for organizations and individuals in the CoP? How are we seeing the impacts? Will there be greater reliance on AI? If yes, what are some of the potential impacts of this and what can we do about it? Do we have fears about using AI now? What could a principled approach to using AI in our work look like?
We will be joined by a fantastic line-up of speakers (more info about them soon!), who will share their insights related to the complex questions around ethics and the use of AI in the current moment. This session will not be recorded.
🔊 In case you’re interested in having more conversations such as this one, don’t forget to join the NLP-CoP (on Slack and LinkedIn).
